the art of re-gifting

some people may shy away from such taboo things as re-gifting. but no, not my friend christina! she confronts what many of us want to do, head on. that is by having a re-gift white elephant xmas exchange!

so in addition to having my first potato latkas (amazing by the way! who would have ever thought sour cream and apple sauce would work so good as a topping together too!) i also am the proud owner of a broken santa ornament, circa 2007.

i mean it was broken. little did the person who brought it know that im
super crafty. and i actually had a hot glue gun with me. why? cause that just the kind of friends christina and i are.
so santa got his head reattached. the sharpy corrected the date (for some reason i crossed out the 7 and wrote an 9 by it... i simply failed to see how easily a 7 could be changed into an 8)
and i now have a new ornament for my tree, price tag and all!!!
other honorale mentions:
pig and monkey sling shot toys. you put your fingers in their front paws and fling them thru the air, and in doing so they squeal... no literally!! they oink and ? WHAT DO MONKEYS DO???
light up drink fountain.
a half eaten advent calendar, up to the day it was of course.
note cards, a bath sponge, and cd set of bill clintons autobiography (cause these 3 things go so well together)
2 holiday pre-charged pez dispenser and a cigar.
and there are for sure more but i cant remember them! so this was an amazing start to the xmas gift giving season and i hope our foreign friends (representing sweden, germany, and belgium) enjoyed a random american holiday tradition.
oh and our poor explaination of the grinch. its hard to explain! try some time!
double oh and my jingle bells ear rings!!

beautiful but boring

i was in washington last week (state not dc, cause everyone asks that :)
for work and even though i lived there for 2 years i was struck by how beautiful it is. so much so that i busted out my phone on the airplane while still flying... i know, im a rebel!!!

the second thing that struck me is why i left. it was so boring. i instantly missed the constant stimulation you get from being in a big city like san diego.

so instead of boring you (and myself again by re-living it) im not going to say much else but about the most fun i had was walking in the snow to subway. HA!

just enjoy the pics! thats about the only reason for this blog entry really.

ashley

it never ceases to amaze me how wonderful my friends are. this weekend ashlin came to visit from irvine. i can not even tell you how cool she is... if you know her, then you get it!

we went to U-31 in north park to see the vokab kompany show (im such a groupie).  well she ended up loving them just as much as me. we had a few drinks, including a 24oz PBR!!!

danced our bootys off and mingled with the band a bit. ok really just the bass player. but ashlin said 'hey you should get kim on your next guest list for the san fran show'

hahaha. thats just the kinda gal she is.

so had an amazing night. and a delicious morning. went to the little mexican place by my apt to have breakfast burritos and coffee. im sitting there and ashlin comes running in saying you need to see this dog.

and this is what i see!

is it a dog, is it a horse blanket, or did some hippie ditch their dreds on the side walk. so i had to snap a pic. and apparently i cant figure out how to rotate it :(

so after my appointment (once again if you know, then you know :) i needed coffee. well ashlin had her coffee from another place in starbucks. the guy said 'i will give you a free whatever you want to throw that away'. ummm what?!?!

ok. so she does. she orders and he asks for her name. she says 'its ashley'.

i say: YOUR NAMES NOT ASHLEY!!! haha and thats why i love ashlin!

a little amendment. i went to facebook to post my blog address so ashlin could see the extent of my crush on her by reading this. well i re-read her happy birth day post to me. i think i  need to share this too:

Well they say it's your birthday (Guitar goes nah-nah-nah-nah-nah) Well Happy Birthday to ya (Guitar goes nah-nah-nah-nah-nah) They say it's your birthday (in higher pitched voice getting louder) (Guitar goes nah-nah-nah-nah-nah) Well Happy Birthday to ya ... Repeat Chorus until crescendo! Glad to see you getting older!

december nights

oh december nights. 2 days. over 300,000 people. way way way too much food!

for those who dont know, december nights is the holiday season kick off for san diego. balboa park is covered in lights, all the museums are open for free and there are carolers and other christmas type performers.

and then there's the international cottages.

had some of the most amazing food ever. falafel, lentils and rice, grape leaves and fried dough from palestine. flat bread, currey, and stuff i dont even know what it was from inida. and ukrainian sausage and saukraut.

now thats just the food that i single-handedly purchased. the benefit of going in a huge group was munching on what other peeps got. had some sausage and saurkraut and pastery from astria and stew from ireland.

and then lets get to the beverages. super yummy horchata from mexico. then hit up the international spirits.

i was like everyone before me when i approached scotland because i didnt know what hot toddy was either (hot tea, honey, orange, cloves, whiskey). also tried some swedish hot spiced wine and of course jello shots.

yes jello shots. apparently they are native to fineland (actually just the vodka is but what eves)

by this point i was so close to a food coma i couldnt go see any of the museums. also there were so many people there that it was almost uncomfortable.

i couldnt even get my pic taken with the grinch (not santa for a change). too long a line. boo!

but none the less december nights was amazing!!!

the apocalypse

when mass chaos breaks out it makes me think its the end of days. last night was like that.

around 145 in the afternoon a jumper ran out onto the coronado bay bridge.

when work was over at 3 the bridge had been shut down. the only way off the island is the strand and hundreds tried that... i wasnt so silly!

i stuck around until 5: went on the roof with binoculars to see, constantly refreshed sigalert, and pretended to work (in an effort to get off an hour early today:)

lucky enough a buddy from work left, couldnt get any where, and came back.

so we went to have dinner and some beers. and wow! every restaurant on orange ave was packed!!! and the traffic was as such.

so it did feel like the apocalypse. which is slightly funny cause we were talking about it the other day cause apparently bananas are going to be extinct in a year (and that for sure is another mark of the end)

and then i remembered i had this pic on my phone. mini bananas at the grocery store. hahaha!

home sweet home

quick precursor: flying slightly drunk is perfect. i got on the plane closed my eyes and all of a sudden we were landing!

so i decided to go home to colorado for thanksgiving this year. i havent been home since college for it. mostly i hate traveling during the holidays and its so close to x-mas anyways.

well my brother had decided that him and his family (wife and 3 kids!!!) would come so i came too. pretty crazy cause i havent seen him since high school and i have never met the family. it was so much fun being with them... coloring, playing eye spy and watching fairly odd parents.

this is my god daughter davianna. shes 3. she ran up to me when i came in the house and called me her other mommy (my bro always said aunt kim, your god mother :)

ive never been around little kids before and the smallest things i had to ask questions about. she wanted a snack and i gave her a grip of goldfish crackers and my mom just laughed at me. things like when she says she needs to potty she needs someone to hold her on it so she doesnt fall in. just stuff i really would never think about.

then the littlest one, aidan (almost 2) is so funny. the most politest kid ive ever witnessed. you hand him his motor cycle and he says thank you. he hands it back and i say thank you and he says your welcome. this could literally go back and forth forever.  they can make a game out of absolutely anything!

and the oldest willow (6) is such an amazing oldest sibling. she is so helpful with the little ones and is always complimenting them. its great to see.

so they took off on friday and i went to the foothills to hang with angy and her BF mike. on the drive up there it started to snow. well when we woke up this is what we saw:

they said this was the first snow of the winter to stick! i brought it with naturally!

i love colorado so much!

but heres the thing. what do you do when its cold out. i mean i havent had to face this dilemma in a long while.

well you go bowling! who cares if its the saturday after thanksgiving and its 11am... you still drink beer!!! and at 99 cents a game we had a great time.
then went to nordstrom to have dinner with my mom (she packed home made turkey noodle soup, which we ate in the lunch room). did a little shopping for my b-day. then hit the airport. its crazy how far away and out in the middle of nowhere it is.

checkin took 2 mins. security took 10 (only cause they picked me to do the new full body x-ray... probably cause there was no one else to pick from and then the guy working there procedded to make fun of my pink shoes and ask me where im from)

the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful. mostly walking around the terminal, laughing at people crowding the gate thinking they are going to get on the flight quicker, and scooping out electrical outlets to charge my cell phone. fell asleep on the plane, got my bag quickly in sd and was back with such ease i thought i had just clicked my heels.

but as much as colorado is home to me i love san diego. i put on flip flops this morning and walked around the farmers market!

hooky

playing hooky is probably the most fun a grown up can have! .... legally and soberly of course!

for reasons like:

HASH HOUSE A-GO-GO! this place has at least an hour wait on weekends. well not in the middle of the week it doesnt. and i can now see why. the food was amazing (pictured: biscuits and gravy with mash potatoes and meatloaf, spinach, bell pepper hash with smoked motzerella w/ a huge biscuit and fresh mixed fruit jam)

this was pretty much all i ate the whole day (besides cereal later :)

then did some shopping, ran errands and watched tv. AMAZING!

birthday-in-a-box

contents:
a homemade chocolate cupcake in individual container, one serving peanut butter frosting in individual container, freeze dried space ice cream (chocolate with chocolate chips), a party popper, a sparkley blower (non noise making kind), a homemade card... oh and the most obnoxious/amazing flowered tights.

and my b-day isnt even for a few more weeks :)

1/2 asian

just wanted to share that im the poo. not super poo. but if i were super poo it would be the kind with powers!

but really its cause i can do nails.

a man with a plan

ahh just another saturday night...

i mean really what else could you possible need besides a 6 pack of beer and condoms!!!

and yes i did take this picture whilst standing behind the guy in the self checkout of the grocery store... with out him knowing

wait... where was i last night?

oh yeah. just look at your wrist and you'll remember!

so this was my friday night:

started out in ocean beach at the sunshine company. very relaxed. supposedly the hippie area of san diego. and i love hippies so i also love sunshine company. and i love that people feel it necessary to give a surfer girl sign to the ladies room a bush. ha! oh and say love again.

then off to mission beach to see THE CONCRETE PROJECT at canes. they were amazing! and that girl can belt w/ so much soul!

and the headliners were double amazing. the first thing that struck me about VOKAB KOMPANY is that one of the guys style reminded me of a circus member. well duh. of course im instantly attracted.
and then the music is what kept me on the dance floor up against the stage the entire show. the genre... well myspace says its hip hop, funk, electronica. im not so sure what that means but i do know its so much fun.

cant wait to see both groups perform again!

then bounced back to ob to have free pizza and sit on the boardwalk. 3am came fast but every minute was loved!

time warp

i do believe the world (or at least california, colorado, and alabama) have fallen into a bizarro time hole... cause this week will not end!
so i wanted to share with everyone what i do to pass the time. this is my email inbox for today.
NUFF SAID!

kimonos as art

went to culture and cocktails last night at the art museum in balboa park. kinda the same concept as TNT, but this one you have to pay... boo! j/k i have no prob supporting the arts.

so the crowd was a bit older, a bit more done up, and i think a bit more there to be seen instead of see. at one point i couldnt help but say: so where is the art in this art museum?

well once we found it it was incredible! the exhibit is called kimonos as art by Itchiku Kubota.

the kimonos are simply gorgeous. extremely detailed and def something to be admired.

on display are also traditional kimono making tools and a video and display on the process.

each one can take about a year to complete.

which just makes the second room you come into even more spectacular.
this is about 1/3 of the symphony of light collection (i didnt get a chance to photo the other parts cause apparently photography is not allowed and a little old lady wagged her finger at me :)
quite breathtaking.
so enough with the art loving. lets do some people watching!
the upstairs section of the museum overlooks a lounge area packed with people drinking, mingeling, and getting pointed at by me and christina. i was dying for someone to catch me but didnt make it happen!
we played a little "yes, no, or for my country"
and then found the best thing of the night: CRAFTS
the teacher was hilarious... i dont think she knew we kick butt at all things crafty cause she kept saying 'ok watch me now, this step is very complicated' and then we would just bust it out!
so those are cranes in our hair.
and we made foxs for our foxs!
so overall another amazing night in san diego.
whats that you ask? who would win in a brawl between c&c vs TNT?
i think i'd call it a tie

TNT

its the thursday night thing!

went to the museum of contemporary art last night down town. a band, a bar, crafts, a very mixed group of people... all for free! (well 3$ donation)

the exhibit is called 'artists response to a changing planet'. heres the blurg about it: the project uses contemporary art to investigate the relationships between fragile natural environments and the human communities that depend upon them.

and here are the things that moved me most:

The Common Denominator of Existence Is Loss
the piece consists of real human and bear bones!
but mostly the shadow it cast on the ground is what really caught my eye.

Love Has Value Because It’s Not Eternal

Some Longings Survive Death

that is woolly mammoth hair braided into flowers!

and yes woolly mammoths are real! i thought they were like unicorns but apparently not

so quite the lovely evening soaking up the culture in san diego

pimp cuppin aint easy

i went to the most amazing shin-dig this weekend. lobster p-cup party. i know... cause they go so good together. but actually they do.

so i decided that my cup would be a sippy cup. ha. nothing says gangster like a spill proof floresent beverage holder! oh and you decorate the cup there! best idea ever. and check out this website: http://warehouse.carlh.com/article_148/
mine should be posted soon!

and whats more pimp is the locale. please notice the ocean in the background. thats cause this party was at an amazing house in the hills of laguna beach.

oh and then the lobster. a couple of these crazy guys caught them right there in the local waters. this one was bigger than my forearm.

so yeah. THATS HOW WE DO!

cant we all just get along?

why yes, i do believe we can.
i was driving down the 15 yesterday evening (from trapeze, woo!) and this crotch rocket comes flying past my right side. well there happens to be a guy on a harley in front of me. so im thinking they are going to rev their bikes and race off like testosterone filled monkeys flinging poo. NOPE. they share the lane! and actually continue to exit the highway and ride side by side down the street.
now really. how far from having perfect world peace could we be!

sitting in a tree

K-I-S-S-I-N-G!

oh banana you are so open with your feelings! i heart your heart too.

this makes me think of one of my fav quotes from kurt vonnegut's slaughterhouse-5. where a character quotes theodore roosevelt (but i dont thing he really said this) :

"i could carve a better man out of a banana"

well i could carve the bestest man out of this banana!

AND I DO. i mean my brother is going to iraq in a month, i grew up as an army brat, and i currently work for the navy... so dont worry about it (side note: to B with love ;)
but this is just plain dumb. camo hersheys kisses!
which then leads me to breast cancer curling irons, pots and pans, golf bags, and whatever else they can make in pink. wait... i support breast cancer awareness too!
i just dont appreciate the major corporations capitalizing on the current issues in our society.

the right amount of ugly

thats always been how ive described my style. and i think that this outfit pretty much screams that. yet i had 3 people ask me where i got my jacket yesterday so...
hmm.

but really i think there are a few options for what happened here:

a) i got dressed in the dark

b) im just a crazy person and wanted to play the part

c) i know something about fashion that you dont yet

d) all of the above

the place mat at the korean bbq has an advertisement for vodka. the first step is using pure water. and that equates to a chick pointing at her eye. crazy?

would you like that combo supersized?

only in america would people be so excited for a holiday where you dont even get a day off!

and we make it as simple as ordering drive thru fast food. this is party city:

each costume they have has a number with a pic. each has a description.  you pick the size you want. and drive thru to the next window!
