the art of re-gifting
so in addition to having my first potato latkas (amazing by the way! who would have ever thought sour cream and apple sauce would work so good as a topping together too!) i also am the proud owner of a broken santa ornament, circa 2007.
beautiful but boring
the second thing that struck me is why i left. it was so boring. i instantly missed the constant stimulation you get from being in a big city like san diego.
so instead of boring you (and myself again by re-living it) im not going to say much else but about the most fun i had was walking in the snow to subway. HA!
just enjoy the pics! thats about the only reason for this blog entry really.

december nights
for those who dont know, december nights is the holiday season kick off for san diego. balboa park is covered in lights, all the museums are open for free and there are carolers and other christmas type performers.
and then there's the international cottages.
had some of the most amazing food ever. falafel, lentils and rice, grape leaves and fried dough from palestine. flat bread, currey, and stuff i dont even know what it was from inida. and ukrainian sausage and saukraut.
now thats just the food that i single-handedly purchased. the benefit of going in a huge group was munching on what other peeps got. had some sausage and saurkraut and pastery from astria and stew from ireland.
and then lets get to the beverages. super yummy horchata from mexico. then hit up the international spirits.
i was like everyone before me when i approached scotland because i didnt know what hot toddy was either (hot tea, honey, orange, cloves, whiskey). also tried some swedish hot spiced wine and of course jello shots.
yes jello shots. apparently they are native to fineland (actually just the vodka is but what eves)
by this point i was so close to a food coma i couldnt go see any of the museums. also there were so many people there that it was almost uncomfortable.
i couldnt even get my pic taken with the grinch (not santa for a change). too long a line. boo!
but none the less december nights was amazing!!!

the apocalypse
around 145 in the afternoon a jumper ran out onto the coronado bay bridge.
when work was over at 3 the bridge had been shut down. the only way off the island is the strand and hundreds tried that... i wasnt so silly!
i stuck around until 5: went on the roof with binoculars to see, constantly refreshed sigalert, and pretended to work (in an effort to get off an hour early today:)
lucky enough a buddy from work left, couldnt get any where, and came back.
so we went to have dinner and some beers. and wow! every restaurant on orange ave was packed!!! and the traffic was as such.
so it did feel like the apocalypse. which is slightly funny cause we were talking about it the other day cause apparently bananas are going to be extinct in a year (and that for sure is another mark of the end)
and then i remembered i had this pic on my phone. mini bananas at the grocery store. hahaha!

HASH HOUSE A-GO-GO! this place has at least an hour wait on weekends. well not in the middle of the week it doesnt. and i can now see why. the food was amazing (pictured: biscuits and gravy with mash potatoes and meatloaf, spinach, bell pepper hash with smoked motzerella w/ a huge biscuit and fresh mixed fruit jam)
this was pretty much all i ate the whole day (besides cereal later :)
birthday-in-a-box

kimonos as art
so the crowd was a bit older, a bit more done up, and i think a bit more there to be seen instead of see. at one point i couldnt help but say: so where is the art in this art museum?
well once we found it it was incredible! the exhibit is called kimonos as art by Itchiku Kubota.
the kimonos are simply gorgeous. extremely detailed and def something to be admired.
on display are also traditional kimono making tools and a video and display on the process.
each one can take about a year to complete.

TNT
went to the museum of contemporary art last night down town. a band, a bar, crafts, a very mixed group of people... all for free! (well 3$ donation)
the exhibit is called 'artists response to a changing planet'. heres the blurg about it: the project uses contemporary art to investigate the relationships between fragile natural environments and the human communities that depend upon them.
and here are the things that moved me most:
The Common Denominator of Existence Is Loss
the piece consists of real human and bear bones!
but mostly the shadow it cast on the ground is what really caught my eye.
Love Has Value Because It’s Not Eternal
Some Longings Survive Death
that is woolly mammoth hair braided into flowers!
and yes woolly mammoths are real! i thought they were like unicorns but apparently not
so quite the lovely evening soaking up the culture in san diego

i went to the most amazing shin-dig this weekend. lobster p-cup party. i know... cause they go so good together. but actually they do.
so i decided that my cup would be a sippy cup. ha. nothing says gangster like a spill proof floresent beverage holder! oh and you decorate the cup there! best idea ever. and check out this website: http://warehouse.carlh.com/article_148/
mine should be posted soon!
and whats more pimp is the locale. please notice the ocean in the background. thats cause this party was at an amazing house in the hills of laguna beach.
oh and then the lobster. a couple of these crazy guys caught them right there in the local waters. this one was bigger than my forearm.
so yeah. THATS HOW WE DO!

K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
oh banana you are so open with your feelings! i heart your heart too.
this makes me think of one of my fav quotes from kurt vonnegut's slaughterhouse-5. where a character quotes theodore roosevelt (but i dont thing he really said this) :
"i could carve a better man out of a banana"
well i could carve the bestest man out of this banana!

c) i know something about fashion that you dont yet
d) all of the above
